Depending where the tooth has gone missing, it can not only look unsightly, but cause other problems in the mouth with speech and chewing and in some cases, affect the shape of your face. But there are other more serious problems that losing a tooth can cause in the future. A gap such as this is a haven for trapping food, causing bacteria to build up- this can lead to further decay, infection and disease, and the surrounding teeth can start to move towards the hole that’s been left. One solution to this problem is a bridge; they are available in various shapes and materials depending on the position of your loss. If your tooth has been lost at the front of the mouth, you can get away with a porcelain replacement that can be matched in colour to the rest of your teeth. If however, the tooth is in a position where a lot of chewing is done, a stronger replacement is required, such as porcelain over metal or gold. There are three main types of bridge on the market. A Maryland bridge is a plastic tooth that is attached to the surrounding teeth with wires and covered with a resin bond- as is the cantilever bridge that is used when there is only one tooth to fix the bridge to. The most common however is where a false tooth or teeth are bonded to two crowns that are cemented onto the adjacent teeth that remain- in this case where two or three teeth need replacing, the fitting can be enhanced further by using an implant to anchor the bridge. Caring for a bridge is important. It will require an attentive cleaning regime and special cleaning tools, as well as regular oral hygiene, but if looked after, a bridge can last you up to 20 years and re-instate the beauty

A Bridge as we know it is a means of getting across a gap, and in dentistry it means the same thing, says a Toxteth dentist. It is a false tooth that is held in suspension using the two teeth either side to hold it in place. It is the same material that veneers and dental implants are made from; the difference is how it is fixed. First digital photos of the rogue tooth is taken, if the tooth has been removed already then the gap is the subject of the photos. From this the new tooth is sculptured using porcelain over a titanium base; the rogue tooth is then extracted and allowed to heal. The teeth that will be used as anchors will need to be prepared to take the new part of the bridge, these will be ground down and shaped so that the anchors will fit over them and look natural. It really is a simple and painless procedure to have, and a necessary one in some cases. Many people lose a tooth and then live with the gap, but what happens is that the healthy teeth either side start to shift into the space. This can then make them less viable as strong teeth, as they will be losing their support from the missing tooth. This causes bite and chewing problems and makes the teeth more prone to infection, it’s often a case of together we`re strong, but divided we`re weaker. For all intents the bridge does an excellent job, and will in the short and long term prevent other problems. It is maintained in the same way that your natural teeth are cleaned and flossed, and at your 6 monthly check up your dentist will remove any tartar from the bridge and make sure there are no problems with adhesion.

A dental bridge is an artificial implant that is anchored onto the existing teeth to restores the natural appearance of the original teeth. They are used by dentists to fill spaces left by one or more teeth in the tooth line. The bridge is held in place by fusing it to existing teeth on either side.

Dental bridges are a simple and effective way of restoring the appearance of a healthy smile but there are other added cosmetic advantages. Gaps caused by missing teeth can lead to leaning and movement of the other teeth. If a missing tooth is not replaced the existing teeth will lean into gap which can cause problems with bite and profile. Bite is the way that the bottom and top rows of teeth sit together and any small alterations in this can cause discomfort to the patient. Dental bridges can also help prevent gum disease which can be very painful and irritating and lead to further health complications such as heart disease. Bacteria that would build up in the gap left by a tooth is prevented by the presence of a dental bridge which improves oral hygiene.

There are a number of different types of dental bridge but the most common is the traditional fixed bridge, where the ceramic false tooth is anchored to the existing teeth either side with crowns and resin. Resin bonded bridges are when the new tooth is secured with metal strips and resin, without the need for crowns. A cantilever bridge is when there is only existing teeth on one side of the gap and therefore the bridge will need to be anchored to two or more teeth on that side.

A dental bridge will usually require several trips to the dentist to complete but is usually a relatively painless procedure. The dentist will take a mold of your teeth and then build the bridge in the lab prior to fixing it. As crowns and resin may need to set the installation may take more than one visit.

Dental bridges can last up to seven years if looked after correctly. They can help improve the appearance of the teeth as well as improving the health of existing teeth and gums. Good standards of oral hygiene and regular check ups will keep the bridge in good condition and leave you smiling again.

Dental bridges are a major contribution of cosmetic dentistry and are a boon to those who have one or more missing teeth. These are false teeth, also called as pontics, and are similar to implants or partial dentures.

The three main types of dental bridges are;
1. Traditional fixed bridge – These are fixed and cannot be removed from the mouth. Two crowns are attached to your teeth on either side of the false tooth to hold it in place.
2. Resin bonded bridge – These are cheaper and are mostly used to replace the front teeth. Metal bands are bonded to the adjacent teeth with a resin to which the bridge is fused.
3. Cantilever bridge – These are more in use when there is a tooth only on one side of the open space and the bridge is anchored over one or more of the natural teeth.

You can get a perfect dental bridge fitted with your Bootle dentist. After giving you a mild anaesthetic, he will prepare your support teeth which are necessary to hold the bridge. If the support teeth are unhealthy, these have to be first fixed before implanting the bridge. Next, a perfect model of your teeth is created using a putty-like material which is used by a dental technician to create your dental bridge. Once done, the bridge is fitted and cemented in the place of your lost tooth.

One of the advantages of dental bridges is longevity if the wearer maintains proper oral hygiene. It is important to consult a good and skilled dentist for this procedure to get a proper fit which will not change your beautiful smile.
